Kala KA-S Mahogany Soprano Ukulele Review

Are you considering buying a Kala KA-S Soprano Ukulele? Looking for the best starter model you can get without spending a lot?

On this page we will discuss the main features of this model and things to consider before you buy.

The Kala Brand Of Ukuleles

First off, a word on Kala as a brand. It is relatively new as a ukulele maker, but has established itself quickly as a quality manufacturer. They have become known for making well-constructed ukuleles, using quality materials and all at a very reasonable price.

Kala ukuleles are aimed at those who want a nicely built, quality-sounding uke, but don’t want to break the bank. They are a great choice for those who want to spend a bit more than the budget brands, such as Mahalo and Makala. Read a bit more on our guide to the brand here. This Kala KA-S ukulele is no exception to the quality produced as standard. It is one of the company’s top selling models on amazon, and one that we can whole-heartedly recommend for outstanding quality at the price.

Head to amazon to get more information on the KA-S or read on for a summary of the model.

Features of this Kala Soprano Ukulele

The key features and specifications of this instrument include the following:

  • Aquila Nylgut strings. Quality strings are really important for a good-sounding uke. These strings come with this uke and are premium quality. The cheapest models usually have awful strings.
  • Soprano Sized (the standard, and smallest size, of beginner uke).
  • Rosewood bridge and fingerboard, this wood produces a great tone at an affordable price.
  • Mahogany neck, complete with gloss finish
  • Geared tuners that are chrome die-cast. Makes for fairly easy tuning (as opposed to friction pegs).
  • 12 Frets (Silver Nickel), with fret position dots on the board for easy navigation.
  • Mahogany body complete with standard white binding on the back and top, giving a nice contrast of the rich satin mahogany finish. If you prefer, a version without the white binding is also available.

New to ukulele? The KA-S can be purchased as part of a bundle with all your needs! Included in the offer are a hard gig case, a polishing cloth and a tuner. Soft gig bags are also available.

Some buyers want a comparison with the cheaper Ka-15s. The main Kala Ka-S vs Ka-15s differences is this model is the white binding and nickel frets (brass on the 15s). They are very similar! Don’t fret too much over the differences.

Any downsides?

As always, there are a few points to consider before you buy:

  • As a soprano-sized ukulele, this model may not be suitable for those with bigger hands. Consider the larger concert size, such as the sister model, the Kala KA-C Concert.
  • The body is not made from solid-wood, so you will not get quite the same quality of sound as comes from more expensive models.
  • The strings can take a while to stay in tune, but this is true for all new strings on a uke. Manual stretching of the strings will help.
  • You’ll probably want to get a case or gigbag, sold separately (unless you get a bundle like that pictured).

Buyers’ Reviews of the Kala KA-S

The KA-S comes highly recommended. It has an average 4.7 rating amongst buyers. The overall satisfaction amongst reviewers is very high. Here is a few reports from amazon:

“I’d recommend this to anyone who wants to try out a ukulele to see if they like it. I had this one for about 2 months before bought another one that was 180 bucks. I really enjoyed playing it and made me want to learn and play the ukulele for the rest of my life.”

An alternative is this KA-SEM, with a beautiful satin finish.

“If you are looking to learn this cool instrument but don’t want to break the bank while still getting a quality piece, look no further.”

“This was my first ukulele, i bought it a bit over six months ago and I still can’t put it down, it’s amazing. “

  1. Recently purchased another brand’s Concert size and though it was the best thing since sliced bread: appearance and sound-wise…. then off-handed I purchased this Kala model from Amazon.

Out of the box I was blown away by the craftsmanship and sound quality for less than $50.

    Keeping this for sure.
