The Lanikai Brand
The Lanikai brand is a part of the Hohner music company, which make instruments since 1857 with roots in south of Germany. Most famous for their harmonicas, Hohner is a great musical instrument brand and as worked with the likes of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Steve Tyler ( to name a few).
Hohner doesn’t just produce quality harmonicas they also offer one of the widest range of products in the industry and have over 150 years of history in the business including working on Lanikai ukuleles. So don’t expect low-quality budget instruments. They are known for their reasonable price accompanied by overall good quality and feel.

Here are some of the specifications of this fine instrument:
- Standard sized soprano ukulele, being portable and light
- Nato body, nice sound on a budget
- 12 frets with geared machine heads, making it easier to tune
- Nato fingerboard, with fast action and comfortable feel
- Strung with Aquila nylgut strings, which are some of the best quality strings out there – Guaranteed to give good sound
- Comes with an instruction booklet, so you get some help with your journey towards ukulele playing.
This is a soprano size. So expect it to be small. Some people find sopranos to be too small for their hands. In such cases consider a slightly larger concert sized (e.g. the LU-21C) or bigger still the tenor sized models.
Also this is a budget offering. Don’t expect a solid-wood masterpiece. That being said, it is well made for the price. But for just a few bucks more…
Consider spending a few dollars more for the slightly sturdier LU-21 if concerned about quality. The main difference between lanikai lu-11 and lu-21 is that the 21′s fretboard is made with rosewood, in comparison to nato wood here. Also, from an esthetic point of view regarding the Lanikai lu-11 vs lu-21, the latter has white binding while this cheaper model has none.
This Lanikai LU-11 scores 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon.com making a great product for its price. Most costumers report their pleasure with its affordability, easy to transport weight and playability. The perfect choice for a first ukulele to buy. Good quality to price ratio.
Some comments include:
“This was my first ukulele, and it was greater than I ever expected! Its size is perfect, and I bring it to school about 3 days a week. It is also comfortable to hold and sounds beautiful. Overall, I give this … 2 thumbs up!”
“I bought this as a gift for our 17 year old who wants to be like the many current indie pop artists playing ukes. (She had recently started playing guitar.) I have played for 30 years and own a Taylor, so I know what a good guitar sounds like. I have never played an ukelele, so I don’t have anything to compare. But to my ear, this ukelele sounds pretty darn good…“
The Lu-11 is very well recommended for beginners in particular. It is a great purchase because it is cheap, yet fairly solid, and beautiful to play. Head over to amazon for lowest price and to read reviews in full.
